A Study in Red is a portrait documentary about Maryam Hashemi, an Iranian visual artist based in London. She discusses some of her methods, ideas, and dreams while working on her new painting.
The focus of this film was to avoid the issues of performance. In my previous experiences, especially portrait documentaries, almost in all cases, there was an element of performance involved. I decided to change this by simply observing my subject and avoiding any interference in what she is doing or saying. I also tried to challenge the idea that documentary film can never simply represent the real, that instead, it is dialectical conjunction of a real space, and the filmmaker that invades it, is the non-fiction element that is always present to break the reality of documentary.
